Couch Time: Top 10 “Smooth” 80s Rock Songs

Top 10 Smooth 80s Rock Songs

By Terrance Moore

First of all, let me define “Smooth 80s Rock Songs” so the critics will know why they’re disagreeing. This category is for the songs that aren’t quite ballads, but don’t fall into the “headbanger” category either. They have a chill relaxed vibe to them, and in some cases you can even get lost in your thoughts. I have to admit it was fun conducting the research to compile this list! I could have very easily made this a Top 20, but managed to narrow it down to ten. These songs brought back a lot of memories, and it’s hard to believe they’re over 20 years old. But they still sound good as ever! As a result of my indecisiveness, the songs are listed in no particular order. If I was forced to rank them, this list would probably never get published. So without further ado…

1. Drive – The Cars

Who’s gonna pick you up…when you fall
Who’s gonna hang it up…when you call
Who’s gonna pay attention…to your dreams
Who’s gonna plug their ears…when you scream
You can’t go on…thinking nothing’s wrong
Who’s gonna drive you home…tonight

2. The Boys of Summer – Don Henley

Out on the road today I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice inside my head said, “Don’t look back, you can never look back”
I thought I knew what love was…what did know
Those days are gone forever.
I should just let’em go but…

I can see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got that top pulled down
And that radio on, baby.
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone.

3. Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) – Eurythmics

(Honorable Mention – Here Comes the Rain Again)

Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world and the seven seas
Everybody’s looking for something.

Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused.

4. Broken Wings – Mr. Mister

Take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
And learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up
And let us in

5. Dirty Diana – Michael Jackson

She likes the boys in the band
She knows when they come to town
Every musician’s fan after the curtain comes down
She waits at backstage doors
For those who have prestige
Who promise fortune and fame
A life that’s so carefree
She’s saying that’s ok, hey baby do what you want
I’ll be your night lovin’ thing I’ll be the freak you can taunt
And I don’t care what you say
I want to go too far
I’ll be your everything if you make me a star

6. Human League – Human

The tears I cry aren’t tears of pain
They’re only to hide my guilt and shame
I forgive you, now I ask the same of you
While we were apart I was human too

I’m only human
Of flesh and blood I’m made
I am just a man
Born to make mistakes

7. When Doves Cry – Prince

How can you just leave me standing
Alone in a world that’s so cold?
Maybe I’m just too demanding
Maybe I’m just like my father, too bold

Maybe you’re just like my mother
She’s never satisfied
Why do we scream at each other?
This is what it sounds like when the doves cry

8. True – Spandau Ballet

So true, funny how it seems
Always in time, but never in line for dreams
Head over heels when toe to toe
This is the sound of my soul
This is the sound

I bought a ticket to the world
But now I’ve come back again
Why do I find it hard to write the next line?
Oh, I want the truth to be said

9. Pour Some Sugar On Me – Def Leppard

Razzle ‘n’ a dazzle ‘n’ a flash a little light
Television lover, baby, go all night
Sometime, anytime, sugar me sweet
Little miss innocent sugar me, yeah.

So c’mon! Take a bottle, shake it up
Break the bubble, break it up.

Pour some sugar on me, ooh, in the name of love
Pour some sugar on me, c’mon fire me up
Pour your sugar on me, I can’t get enough
I’m hot, sticky sweet from my head to my feet, yeah

10. In the Air Tonight – Phil Collins

Well if you told me you were drowning
I would not lend a hand
I’ve seen your face before, my friend
But I don’t know if you know who I am?
Well I was there and I saw what you did
I saw it with my own two eyes
So you can wipe off that grin
Know where you’ve been
It’s all been a pack of lies
