Lyrical Legends: The Roots – Dear God 2.0

The Roots

Dear God 2.0

By Terrance Moore

Dear God, I’m trying hard to reach you
Dear God, I see your face in all I do
Sometimes, it’s so hard to believe it…
But God, I know you have your reasons

In an era where the music industry routinely sweeps songs containing thought provoking lyrics under the rug, The Roots continue to push forward with the formula that has built a following so massive they’re able to succeed in spite of the machine. The lyrics to Dear God 2.0 delve into a number of issues many of us have experienced, and even questioned, in our daily lives. There’s so much chaos in the world now, and it’s difficult to understand God’s purpose behind it all.

They said he’s busy hold the line please
Call me crazy, I thought maybe he could mind read
Who does the blind lead?
Give me a sign please
If everything is made in China, are we Chinese?
And why do haters separate us like we siamese?
Technology turning the planet into zombies
Everybody all in everybody’s dirty laundry
Acid rain, earthquakes, hurricane, tsunamis
Terrorist, crime sprees, assaults, and robberies
Cops yellin’ stop, freeze
Shoot him before he try to leave
Air quality so foul, I gotta try to breath
Endangered species
And we runnin’ out of trees

With everything going on in the world, as Black Thought stated, I’m still one of His biggest fans. I may question, but my faith will never waiver. The trials and tribulations of life can definitely take a toll on our sanity, and the daily repetitious cycle we find ourselves in can be extremely discouraging. How many times have we asked ourselves in one way or another, “Is this all there will ever be to my life? What’s the purpose?”

Yeah… It’s still me, one of your biggest fans
I get off work
Right back to work again
I probably need to go ahead and have my head exam
Look at how they got me on the Def Jam payment plan

At the end of the song, The Roots ask a question millions of people ponder every day. Why has God allowed the world He created to become so ugly? Why must life be such a struggle? I definitely don’t have a definitive answer to either of these questions, but of course I have an opinion. My belief is our existence is merely a piece to the spiritual puzzle God is creating. It’s extremely easy to think of only ourselves when pondering the purpose of life, but I feel there’s more to the story. Maybe I’ll learn when the time comes for me to exit this physical world into the spiritual realm, but I have a feeling once I’m in His presence, those questions will no longer matter.

Why is the world ugly when you made it in your image?
And why is livin’ life such a fight to the finish?
For this high percentage
When the sky’s the limit
A second is a minute, every hour’s infinite
