Lyrical Legends: Jay Z – U Don’t Know

U Don’t Know

By Terrance Moore

I sell ice in the winter…I sell fire in hell
I am a hustler baby…I’ll sell water to a well

Motivational speakers have a unique ability to bring out the best in you. They understand the power of words and their ability to convince the weakest of individuals they can accomplish anything under the sun if they set their minds to it. Famous speakers such as Tony Robbins, Deepak Chopra and Robert Kiyosaki have motivated millions to take control of their lives, and convinced us that through hard work and the implementation of a solid plan, there are no limits to what we can accomplish! In 2001, Jay Z released U Don’t Know, a track that became my anthem for the next several years.

He begins the song describing his lifestyle prior to making the decision to retire from the drug game, and then proceeds to describe his growth process as he comes to recognize opportunities he never would have considered during his previous life.

And if somebody woulda told ’em that Hov’ would sell clothin
Heh..not in this lifetime..wasn’t in my right mind

Although I’ve never been a drug dealer, you don’t have to come from that world to understand the decisions poverty forces you to make. Some would say all he talked about was how much money he made as his career progressed. But if we read between the lines, the message isn’t just about generating revenue; it’s a prime example of what can happen if we continue to work hard to accomplish our dreams.

I’ll tell you the difference between me and them
They tryin to get they ones..I’m tryin to get them M’s

I can honestly say I’m still trying to get them M’s. If you combine my income over the past 10 years or so, you could say I made at least one! But I guess that doesn’t count, huh? Anyway… During the latter part of my 20s and my early 30s, I spent more time studying than I did in the club. As a result, I’ve managed to sculpt out a pretty good life for myself. Although I’ve been successful in my endeavors, I’ve never been one to become too complacent. Combine that with a short attention span and a hunger for more…you get part 2 of the story that is my life. So to quote another line from the motivational speaker known as Jigga…

On to the next one…
