Lyrical Legends: Cyndi Lauper – Time After Time

Time After Time

Cyndi Lauper

By Terrance Moore

If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall I will catch you..I’ll be waiting
Time after time

Time After Time is a Cyndi Lauper classic that will live on forever. The chorus alone has numerous applications. It can be used in reference to friendships, relationships and even religion/spirituality. It’s always comforting to know that no matter what happens in this life, no matter what direction you take, you have someone or something to comfort you in times of despair.

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick and think of you
Caught up in circles…confusion is nothing new

My interpretation of this song (and the video appears to support my theory) is that of a person who has outgrown a relationship as well as their surroundings. Although they love the person in their life, it’s time to make a change for the sake of their own sanity. Unfortunately, no matter how much we care about a person, there’s always the potential for a shift in thinking when it comes to what we consider to be important. One person’s comfort zone can feel like a prison to someone else. If you don’t give the people in your life room to grow, they’ll slip right through your fingers.

Sometimes you picture me…I’m walking too far ahead
You’re calling to me…I can’t hear what you’ve said
You say go slow…I fall behind
The second hand unwinds

We all have our own agendas and goals in life, which makes it easy to get out of sync with the people we love. The more ambitious we are, the less time we have to spend with family and friends. If we’re not careful, it’s very easy to become a stranger to the most important people in our lives. This is where the unconditional love the chorus speaks of comes into play. It is possible to be on the same page with someone without having to do everything their way. We find a way to compromise for the ones we love. If we’re unwilling to compromise, then we ultimately force them to make a decision they don’t want to make. Feelings of resentment die a slow death. Whether they choose to do things your way or exit from your life, you’ll end up losing in the end.

After my picture fades..and darkness has turned to gray
Watching through’re wondering if I’m okay
Secrets stolen from deep inside
The drum beats out of time…
