Lyrical Legends: Tim McGraw – Live Like You Were Dying

Live Like You Were Dying

Tim McGraw

By Terrance Moore

I was in my early forties
With a lot of life before me
And a moment came that stopped me on a dime
I spent most of the next days
Looking at the x-rays
Talkin’ ‘bout the options
And talkin’ ‘bout sweet time

Although we all know tomorrow is not promised to us, we still have a tendency to act as though it is. It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day and take life for granted. We tend to spend very little time thinking about our own mortality. We read or hear about death almost every day, but it doesn’t always register because it happened to someone else. It’s when we’re faced with our own mortality that our perspective on life changes. The one thing you thought you had plenty of, time, is disappearing faster than you realized. What would you do if you knew your days were numbered? The lyrics to this song describe a man who not only had to face death in the eyes; he made every effort to do it with a smile.

I went skydiving
I went Rocky Mountain climbing
I went 2.7 seconds on a bull name Blue Manchu
And I loved deeper
And I spoke sweeter
And I gave forgiveness I’d been denying

It’s unfortunate it takes the possibility of death to make us want to become the person we could have been all along. We never think about all the “I love you’s” that go unsaid until we’re no longer able to say them. Not everyone has a chance to make amends before they leave this world. So it would be beneficial for us to be the person we know we can be while we still have the chance. Sometimes we’re not the one to leave unexpectedly, and we’re left with the guilt that comes with knowing we didn’t give that person our all.

I was finally the husband
That most of the time I wasn’t
And I became a friend a friend would like to have
And all of a sudden going fishin’
Wasn’t such an imposition
And I went three times that year I lost my dad
I finally read the Good Book, and I
Took a good, long, hard look
At what I’d do if I could do it all again

Make the most of the time you’re given, so when the day comes for God to call you home, your loved ones will be left with nothing but sweet memories of a wonderful loving person who brought nothing but joy and laughter to their lives.
